Prologue to Godquest

I’m fourteen and off to kill my brother! Prologue to Godquest

Kate woke up with the sun, today was the day! It was finally here! The day he would go out into the world and make a name for himself. Kate threw open his curtains and looked over his family's farm for one of the last times. Closing his window again, Kate quickly dressed, he looked into his chest, which held all his worldly possessions. He took out his chain shirt, it wasn’t the finest piece of armor in the land, but it was his. Next, he removed his ax, now this was a thing of beauty, enchanted never to break, it was the finest thing he owned, and it wasn’t even his. It was purchased as a gift for his brother Siegfried. He determined that it was beneath him and gave it to Kate. Oh, how he loathed Siegfried, that narcissistic little Bich, how he walked around like he owned the place, how their parents treated him like a fucking god, how he was given the right to name Kate, how he used that to name Kate Katheren, such a feminine name, he never heard the end of it as a child, how he decided his given name of Saul wasn’t fitting of someone who was destined to become a god and took the name Siegfried, how he would find Kate and do the most horrible things, getting him alone and doing as he will. But that all changed a year and a half ago when he left on his quest to achieve fame, fortune, and most of all, godhood. Finally, Kate thought he would be free of his brother's abuse, but after he left, it was all about how sad it was that Siegfried left, and how Kate should miss his brother more.   Nonetheless, that was still the best year of his life, Kate thought as he sped down the stairs, excited to see what his parents had done to celebrate the occasion, but his parents were nowhere to be found, oh well, he thought, too bad that the people who hadn’t given one fuck about him before in their miserable lives wouldn’t be there to watch him leave it. Just as Kate was leaving, his pack filled with enough supplies to last a few weeks. He's suddenly grabbed from behind “And just where do you think you’re going?” said Kate's mom “I am off to go on an adventure Mom.” said Kate, rather annoyed with this turn of events, “the only place you’re going is back to your room” “why not? After all, Saul went out on his first adventure at 12, I’m fourteen!” Kate’s mom recoiled slightly at the mention of Seigfreid “his name is Seigfreid so you should address him as such, now as I was saying” “Now wait just a moment” Kate said, cutting off his mom “How come when Saul changed his name you just accept it, but when I change my name that's when you choose to fight tooth and fucking nail?” “Yes, well your brother is a special case,” his mom said, now also thoroughly annoyed with this conversation, “you know that because of the prophecy that Seigfreid will be perfectly fine, I mean he is destined to become a god after all, but look at you! You aren’t ready! You even packed that sloth mask ""How the hell did you know that!?” “I looked in your room, now listen to me, you aren’t ready, now go back to your room bec-” Kate cuts her off “NO, SHUT. UP, I AM LEAVING THIS HELL HOLE THAT YOU HAVE DUG FOR YOURSELF” Kate screams, pinning his finger to his mother's chest like a terrible scar, forcing his mom to recoil, shrinking, looking for any escape to a conversation that she was regretting getting into very much, “O- Okay, if you th-think you’re ready Kate I guess you can go, it is your birthright” “Oh so now you’re going to be supportive, I should have expedited as much from you.” Kate sighed, “Oh it doesn’t matter now, Because I’m off to prove the world wrong, bad luck, Mom, and I’ll see you in hell.” “I love you, honey, good luck!” his mom said back, Kate turned back, a curious look in his eyes, “You don’t mean that, so why say it?” “Oh, fine FUCK YOU AND GO TO HELL, there, that better?” his mom asked, Kate laughed “Well at least we both know where to meet!”.   Kate walked into the town of Godsfoge, and, just outside of the town center he saw him, Raemond didn’t exactly blend in, his parents, who had come from lands far to the east, had died soon after arriving, However, Rae had not, of course, that wasn’t his real name, but no one could pronounce it, so the orphanage gave him the name Raemond, who, like Kate, chose to embrace the name to spite those who gave it to them. “Hey Rae, you ready?” Kate said, “Reddy as I’ll ever be.” Rae Responded. And, after that brief exchange of words, the two set off on their quest, the goal unspoken but clear, they would kill Seigfreid, no they must kill Seigfreid, before he became a god, before he became too powerful for them to stop, and before he could hurt anyone else. , and who knows what he would do with all that power. And so the two outcasts set out to save a world that was in love with its destroyer.  Kate sighed, he and Rae had been tracking Seigfreid for a few months now, but every time they got a new lead, it would be a bust, too old or entirely false, they didn’t get the last one very often anymore, as it usually turned out very poorly for those who gave false info, although that meant that they had to evade capture in a few cities, they were both experts in going unnoticed from their years spent as outcasts, only having one another to trust and rely on. This is all going to be worth it, Kate thought to himself, we will have our revenge on that rat bastard, they would be saving the world too, but that was just a nice bonus, for all Kate and Rae cared about the rest of world could burn to ashes as long as they could be happy, after all, what had the world done for them while they suffered? “I think that we finally have ‘the lead’ Kate.” Rae said, jolting Kate out of his thoughts, “Really?” Kate asks Rae, skeptical, “Certain.” Rae responds, “If you're sure.” Kate said. The two gather their stuff, moving in silent agreement, exchanging thoughts almost telepathically, so deep their bond. Prepared, they exited the hideout they had fashioned as their home base and quickly made their way to the road setting off for what they both hoped would be the final time. The trek was long and sparsely traveled, so the two had much time alone, the only people around for miles, giving them plenty of time to talk, so that’s what they did. “So what’s the tip say this time?” Kate asks, who, in their haste to leave, had forgotten to ask, “Didn’t I tell you that? Said Rae, who, in their haste to leave, had forgotten to answer, “No” “Oh, our informant, a man named Vincint said that a man matching the description of Seigfreid to a tee came into his shop a few moons ago.” “ahh, what sort of shop does he own?” “He’s a weapon smith, he said that Seigfreid came into his forge wanting to sell him a cart full of various weapons, such as spears, war axes, and even swords both short and long, he said that they all appeared to be of goblish make. Then he said he saw Seigfreid leaving town on this road a few hours later ""Hmm, good info, if it is to be trusted” Said Kate “Don’t worry I gave him the same memo that I give to everyone.” Rae responded.   The two partners trekked on, finally, They stopped when the sun began to touch the horizon, and then they diverted into the thick wood flanking the road for about a half-league, only then did the duo stop and make camp, eat a cold dinner, both of them deeming a fire too risky, and turn in for the night Rae took first watch, However the extra security proved unnecessary as the two continued to the great city of Ulzeck, a trek of many leagues, they traveled without incident 3 days more, however, on the fifth day. “I don’t know Kate,” Rae said “I’m getting bad vibes from around here too” Kate agreed, “check just in case?” He asked “Of course” Rae responded, Rae paused a moment, casting the spell, as Rae was more skilled in magic than Kate, Rae only needed a moment to detect the hundred cavalry charging straight towards them. “SHIT!” Rae yelled, pulling Kate into the brush. “They’re coming for us” Rae whispers to Kate “FUCK!“ was Kate's response “We should get to a safer place.” Rae said Kate agreed. They moved to a tree that had good leaf cover and looked, expecting to see hundreds of soldiers, they saw just ten riding behind Someone who could’ve passed for a king, donning magnificent shining steel armor with bronze highlights that had been polished to shine even more than gold, it was unmistakably Seigfreid, those behind him, though less extravagantly clad still shone in the sunset, Seigfreid pulled his horse to stop and pointed to the bush that Kate and Rae had been hiding in, at which point one of them dismounted and checked the bush that they had been hiding in not 5 minutes prior, “Someone was definitely here Sir” The man reported, “all of you, dismount and find them,” Siegfried ordered. As the men searched, Kate and Rae hid in the tree, expecting at any moment to have to flee or fight as they had done so many times before, The two sat, crouched on a branch, hardly daring to breathe, for fear of being found, minutes, ticked by, every second a decade, Kate had always thought it was just an expression, that was, until experiencing it for the first time, it was nothing new to him now, of course, but it was something new with his mark close enough to hold a conversation with. Kate was enamored with the situation, all of his greatest problems right in front of him, the means to solve them resting in his hand, he could tell that Rae was thinking the same thing via their bond, they would fight, but only if it came down to it. It was, at this point, that Seigfreid grew bored and decided to start the fight. A mental wall smashed into Kate and Rae like a tidal wave screaming with the words NO MORE HIDING, the force of the attack was so much that it threw Kate and Rae to the ground, alerting the soldiers to their presence, For a moment, time stood still, both sides in shock at what just happened, until one of the men snapped out of it, “FOR SEIGFREID!” He yelled, charging the pair with a Doppelh?nder. This spurred Kate and Rae into action, The man struck at Rae’s waist as he parried, as the two dueled, Kate threw his ax at another man who had charged, as he drew his own sword he heard the crack of his ax striking his target, one down. He thought to himself, make that two, he heard from Raes' mind. Muttering the incantation, he brought down his sword, cutting the ground, and a line of rock spikes up towards a group of soldiers, out of the corner of his eye he saw another line of spikes from Rae. One of the soldiers couldn’t get out of the way in time and was impaled on a spike. Three down, seven more to go. Kate thought, should we run? Rae thought why, we’re taking this, why run when we’ve got them on the back foot? They both turned their attention away from the mental conversation, it’s dangerous to get embroiled in conversation during battle. Kate surveyed the battlefield, located a soldier who was alone, yanked his ax out the face of the soldier who he’d buried it in, and charged the lone soldier, slapping aside his feeble attempt at a parry and slammed the head of the ax into the man's unprotected neck, in between the breastplate and helmet. The poor soul collapsed to the ground, he wasn’t dead yet, but he would be in a few minutes. Kate turned his attention to the rest, all of whom were fighting Rae. Without a second thought, he ran to Rae, “Ugnies Suvis!” He yelled, and a small marble of fire appeared at the tip of his finger, taking aim on the run, he released the fire, which shot off with a small crack, and it found its mark, melting the metal of the helmet on one of the soldiers surrounding Rae, the man yanked off his helmet with a string of curses, allowing Kate an easy kill, it was just a mercy kill, really. He barged in just in time, Rae was losing badly, with cuts and bruises all over. Kate being there didn’t help much, One of the soldiers stepped forward and gave Kate an opening, Rae parried his blade, and Kate struck the soldier's knee, bringing him to the ground and Rae finished him off. It was at this point, that the fore remaining soldiers, who had just watched their comrades get slaughtered by two people barely too old to be called kids, turned tail and fled. “How in the living HELL did we just do that?” Kate asked Rae “I don’t fucking know” was Raes’ response “sh-should we give chase?” Kate wondered “Shure, I can still hear them, come on, let's go!” Rae started to run after the fleeing survivors, only to collapse with a cry of pain that would make even a banshee draw back in terror. One of the cuts Rae had sustained, a gash along his stomach, was far, far worse than he had thought, it was not only long, but deep. Another cry from Rae jolted Kate back to reality, He rushed over to Rae and knelt beside him. “NO, your not going to fucking die on me Rae, I’m not going to let you.” Said Kate, fighting through tears “Don’t worry Kate, It’s okay.” Rae said softly “It’s NOT though, you're dying right in front of me and it’s ALL MY FAULT!” Kate cried, Clutching Raes’ hand in his own, his tears now raining down like a rainforest in monsoon season “It’s not your fault, I was the one who let myself get surrounded, not you, you came and saved me there, it’s not your fault and it never will be, don’t blame yourself for this” Rae said, then Kate knelt down and the two embraced and the world stood still, forever later Rae spoke their last living words “Here Kate, take this” and he removed an amulet and Kate clenched it his hands, “Once I’m gone, and I don’t have much time left in the mortal plane, put it on and something fantastic shall happen, and with that, the two embraced. A while later Kate heard a faint sigh, and he knew that Rae was dead, as he looked at Raes’ body resting in his arms, he saw it growing more and more faint as the body transcended into the plane of the dead, as he watched he remembered the amulet and put it on, “Thank The GODS you put that on, I was beginning to get worried.” Said Rae. “WHATTHEFUCKRAE I THOUGHT YOU WHERE FUCKING DEAD!” shouted Kate, incredibly shocked at what just happened, “That's the neat part, I sort of, am? I think so at least. Come on, let's go!” Rae exclaimed “No no no, you don’t just FUCKING DIE, COME BACK TO LIFE and say LET’S GO, what the actual FUCK, I need an explanation, now.” Kate said, “Oh alright, I’ll explain as we go, all right, Okay? “Okay let’s go.” “So remember when we robbed that Jewlery shop because they gave us bad info?” “How could I not?” “Well this was one of the things I took.” “How does it work?” “I was getting to that. So, this is what’s called an immortality locket, and when two people are linked via it, as long as one is alive, the other one can’t die.” “So how did you die, after all, I’m still alive aren't I?” “That’s the weird part, I don’t know, my best guess right now is that there is an upper limit to how much it can take before your body can’t keep going, and I think I hit that limit, but because I can’t die I got stuck as being a ghost.” “Huh, Well, we know what to do now.” “Which is?” “We’re going to get your body back.” “Okay and how are we going to do that?” “Simple, the answer to all of our problems, and I do mean all” “Surely you aren’t saying…” “That’s exactly what I’m saying, we are going to become gods.” And with that the two partners set off on their new quest, a Godquest.
