When I was six years old, I heard my master tell a person who had been kneeling in front of the temple for seven days that he could only be released. I thought it sounded pretty good.
At the age of seven, I heard my master say to a person who had been kneeling in front of the temple for ten days that he was very moved, but there were not many Dharma names left, and the best one among the remaining ones was just "Shi Nai".
He said: Thank you, Master, but I am a man of great pride. As long as it's not this Dharma name, anything else is fine.
The master said: Then there is nothing left but to let go.
That person might have fainted from kneeling, and actually publicly expressed the outrageous idea: Master, why can't a Dharma name be three characters, it has to be only two?
Master said: My master passed down just like this, and it is stipulated that three characters cannot be taken.
He said: Three words won't work, can use four words then.
The master said: You talk too much, do you want to call Sakyamuni?
He finally swept a spring temple and stayed in Shaolin, with the Buddhist name Shi Nai.
Master said he liked the word "Ran", the things contained in "Ran" are the hardest to explain. He gave me the word "Ran". At that time, I didn't know the meaning of such a good Dharma name, actually, I preferred "Shi Kong", my fellow monk also agreed to change another Dharma name, but after we expressed this idea, we were punished to kneel for a day and night. Master said, these are not something you can change at will, they are brought by fate, you cannot change with fate unless you exchange it with your life.
