Chapter 26

Maiwyn grabs her pack full of herbs and a sleeping roll and throws her picked herbs in. They've been walking for some time from when they left that unknown dinosaur, and Aleena is there to see Maiwyn off to continue her travels.

Aleena watches Maiwyn gather the last bit of herbs from the ground, but she can't shake off why Maiwyn told her to leave the dinosaur.

"You won't be able to stop it you know?" Maiwyn says, breaking Aleena's tunneling concentration.

"What do you mean?" Aleena asks.

"The dinosaurs, they are already breeding to a point where there is no going back. You can't kill them all," Maiwyn answers.

"How do you know that was my intention? Maiwyn, you know something," Aleena tells her sternly, getting more skeptical.

She smiles, "I should be setting off Aleena. But before I go I must warm you of something."

"What's wrong Maiwyn?" Aleena asks curiously but also with worry.

"I've been searching the Red Leaf Forest and gathering evidence. I hate to tell you but... there's another clan of elves here, one in particular. But they're corrupted and they practice your necromancy," she says in an almost sarcastic tone.

"Elves do no such thing!" she snarls at Maiwyn. "Where did you hear this lie?"

"I heard rumors, I investigated further and followed those rumors, and it lead me here."

Maiwyn picks up a small pouch of dinosaur bones from her bag, and shows it to Aleena. "These bones aren't fully restored, but they're starting to come alive. They glow with a green tint. And there were corpses of other dead animals, coming back to life with this similar magic energy."

"That's impossible, no one would stoop so low," Aleena doesn't want to believe, and she is unprepared to see the dinosaur contents in the pouch.

"Someone would," Maiwyn pauses. "And she's one of our kind. Aleena, you realize no will listen or help you because you walk with those two piles of humans waste. No one takes you seriously."

"Don't talk about Faylin or Lyrian like that, they're my friends!" Aleena defends. "How do you know so much about this corruption? Where did you hear this?"

"I was attacked by some of those animals. And they were just an undead pack of wolves. I managed to escape, but only after a fierce battle."

Aleena looks doubtful, not knowing how much is true, but Maiwyn continues speaking.

"When I first found out about the Beastmaster, I searched the forest thoroughly until I came across a tribe of corrupted dark elves that practice necromancy. A secret coven practicing the vile arts. They didn't call themselves 'Beastmaster' but I've learned many things from watching them from afar," she smirks, "many things."

Screeching is heard from the bushes. A burst from a green beast knocks Aleena off her feet and rushes towards Maiwyn.

  "Maiwyn watch out!" she shouts.

Aleena jumps up to tackle the creature but misses from a trip into the dirt again. Maiwyn is standing calm and the creature slows nearing towards her.

Scales all along it's neck stretches as it lowers it's head to Maiwyn. Her hand reaches and gently rubs it's crest on top of it's nose, shutting it's eyes in comfort. Her head turns in a cold calming manner, "Aleena, this is your last warning. Stop chasing the Beastmaster."

Maiwyn looks to the ground with almost a pang of guilt, "stop chasing me. Nothing good will happen. No one will help you, no one will believe you. Just let nature be."

"How could you do this to us! We were your family, wood elves stick to together!" tears form in Aleena's eyes.

"Says the sister that helped banish me from Aeirwood clan. And now you roam with humans? Truly pathetic," she turns towards Aleena with disgust in her gaze. "This is your last chance Aleena. Join me or die alongside the humans."

Aleena looks shocked with her eyes wide open, and can't believe what it happening. Her heart sinks as anger builds with red and tears, "if anyone is human filth, it is YOU! YOU sent a human to kill me in the first place! You're the one who's too proud and entitled to come back to your own family after a temporary punishment!"

"Valery was just a hired mercenary from human coin I got from my contact. I knew you would kill her and I'd thought you might learn a thing or two from her. Like how disgusting humans can be, how they torture and kill themselves blindly. I thought you might join me after facing her. Instead, you keep hunting natural, million year old beings," she hops along the back of the beast, mounting her monolophosaurus. "Even if Valery did kill you, there was a pack of sinornithosaurs ready to have her as a lunch.

Aleena is gasping on the dirt with anxiety, her hair and face a mess. The monolophosaur slowly brings Maiwyn closer, and she is able to gaze upon a high view of Aleena for her inflated ego.

"But now I know where you stand. It's a shame, because you were my friend," Maiwyn trots her pet as it tilts it's head at a rapid move, "Come for me and you sign your death. Tell the red leaves to move or they'll be dire consequences. I need the room for my new habitat."

"You are no longer my sister," Aleena threatens but also begs for mercy. She doesn't know how to respond. Her hands tremble. Her throat is choking with so many emotions rapidly rolling through her mind.

"Please just leave me and my people alone," her voice blares, "Leave my forest alone!"

She screams, "you killed our family!"

Maiwyn shakes her head at a fallen Aleena, "they deserved it for banishing me and betraying our own brethren. Now get up and scram before I have your head. Stop hunting dinosaurs and tell the Red Leaves to 'move it!'"

Maiwyn rides off atop her monolophosaurus, turning slowly, then darting off into the deep wilds on a dashing prehistoric predator.

Tears run down Aleena's face, staring in silence for what seems forever, processing everything that transpired. Dust is kicked up nearing towards her and squawking roars are heard. A pack of monolophosaurus runs past her and kicks her, rolling her in the dirt and trampling her.

"Aghhh!" Aleena shouts and tries crawling to a safe space while dust kicks up from the stampede that clouds her eyes.

One of the dinosaurs stands tall on it's hind legs. It stomps it's feet in place and raises its head skyward. One long crest juts out reaching the air. It releases a high pitched scream. The beast runs with the rest of the pack and the stomping heads for the Red Leaf clan.

Aleena scrambles to her feet and bolts for the tribe, "NO!!!"

She sprints through the forest, weaving past shrubbery and fallen debris.

Arriving at the village, it is already too late. Many of the red leaf elves lay dead around the encampment.

Monolophosaurs of a pack of six are terrorizing elves. Wagon homes and storages are tipped over. Bodies of elves are left dismembered on the ground. Blood stains the grass and earth. Carts and belongings are tossed about randomly. Monolophosaurus run amok, biting fleeing villagers.

Aleena spots one as it digs it's mouth into a tent and pulls out an elf woman. It starts slamming her around. Cries are loud and painful and the girl is thrashed side to side violently.

Aleena draws her bladed bow and charges forth with a warcry.

Arrows fly from her bow, striking the beasts repeatedly in their sides and chests. Each arrow pierces deeply beneath thick hide, embedding itself firmly within flesh, causing intense agony and distress for each victim struck.

As she closes range, her arm flings backwards and releases arrows rapidly as her bowstring flickers.

Several projectiles penetrate deep into muscle tissue, before eventually lodging within the bone of the beast, knocking it a short distance. Her target drops limp, with mouth open, never able to catch it's prey.

Multiple arrows fly around from different hunters, hitting the single crested carnivores as they fall. She spots two more beasts dead in the distance, but Faylin and Lyrian are battling two of them together.

One lunges in fangs first but Lyrian conjures an earth spell, sending clumps of dirt flying towards the animal's eyes.

It screams, backing away. Lyrian follows suit by shooting another spray of sharp earthen shrapnel, piercing the beast.

Faylin jumps in and smashes the beast in the face with her hammer. But fangs gnarl on her shield, and she tries to push it away. Faylin stumbles back, unprepared for such strength.

Aleena launches arrows from her bows and joins Faylin and Lyrian.

Her shots hit the monster square between shoulders blades and one straight through the crest. Blood oozes slowly from the wounds inflicted, leaving trails behind as the creature recoils backward, shrieking a hiss.

Its claws scramble forward but Lyrian conjures a wall of stone that traps its legs and Faylin finishes it with a bang on top of the skull.

Aleena glances over to the other beast who is rummaging inside a crate full of eggplants, and another one afar, facing off a battalion of elven warriors and archers.

The beast in front of them looks up at the crafter's daughter as she mimics the roars of the beast. "Rawr, rawr!" she hysterically says.

  "Oh my gosh!" Faylin exclaims.

The monolophosaurus cries a loud high pitched hiss, ready to fight a prey who is challenging it. Rushing towards the small child, it's the perfect hunt. The daughter freezes in fear, hearing its footsteps pound harder and closer towards her she gasps.

Faylin intervenes, closing in and kicking it in the air for both to land on the ground. She runs over to the child who is about to cry.

"It's going to be okay sweetheart, let's get you out of here," Faylin holds her hand as she leads her back to safety inside the tent.

"Faylin get back!" Aleena screams as Faylin looks back seeing it charging for them once again. Dashing, as Faylin holds her shield up in fear, it is interrupted by a slash from the crafter Reklan holding a sword, ready to defend his daughter. It cuts deep into the monster's back.

Blood splatters everywhere. As the beast turns around, Reklan swings downward at its belly. And the elder Kyrza counters, blowing a spell of wind to knock it away.

Lyrian joins in and impales it's fall on a bed of earthen spikes, killing the creature.

Aleena looks around and the creature attack is done, "we defeated all of them?" She looks around at her fallen clan members and civilians, laying dead on the ground.

The elder, injured approaches Aleena, "we need your help once more Aleena."

"Of course Elder Kyrza. What may I help you with?" Aleena kneels as she catches her breath.

"It pains me to say that our casualties are five people and we lost one of our protectors," he pauses. "You are a great warrior, please, we need your strength to defend our clan. We need you here with us."

"I accept wholeheartedly but-" Aleena replies.

"No. Don't trust her, she's working with humans," one elf claims.

"Have you not seen them protect our village just now? These humans have earned our trust." Elder Kyrza claims, trying to reason with the elf.

"If you saw how they treated their meat, you wouldn't allow this either!" another elf points at Faylin accusingly.

"Enough! Stand down and go help the others rebuild," the elder orders the elf.

The elf backs off and leaves. Two more injured elves walk up, both haggard and exhausted from exertion.

"Please take these arrows," one of the wounded elves gives her their quiver of special flammable arrows.

"I will gladly serve and fight for the good of others," Aleena replies humbly as she takes the quiver graciously. She inspects the quality, noting nicks along the arrowhead.

"Thank you all for fighting with us," the injured elf says to Aleena and her friends.

"Yes, thank you indeed," the elder has a hint of sadness in his eyes for the dark times they face.

Aleena turns to the elder, "Elder, I need to speak with you. This is urgent."

She steps aside and motions for Kyrza to follow her along with Faylin and Lyrian. News of horrific events must be known. And they all follow into the Kyrza's mobile home on wagon wheels.
