Thirteenth School Anniversary Week

  Thirteenth, School Anniversary Week

The freshmen returned to school and began participating in a week-long school anniversary celebration from October 1st to 7th.

In 1910, five Christian churches from the United States, Britain and Canada chose a scenic spot with a quiet environment outside the South Gate of C City, on the banks of the Jinjiang River, west of Nantai Temple, which was said to be the site of the ancient "Zhongyuan", to establish West China Union University. This is the predecessor of West China Medical University and also the first modern university established in C City and even in western China. In 1914, the medical school was opened. Dr. Lin Ze from Canada was the first missionary dentist to come to China, pioneering dentistry, making the School of Stomatology at this university extremely famous nationwide and worldwide. At the same time, its departments of literature, philosophy and science were also in a leading position in the southwestern region during that period. During the Anti-Japanese War, C City was the Great Rear Area, and Huaxi was one of the sacred places where China's higher education lifeline was preserved and continued. At that time, the Medical College of National Central University in Nanjing, Jinling University, Jinling Women's College, Qilu University in Jinan, the Biology Department of Soochow University in Suzhou, Yenching University in Beiping, and some teachers, students and nursing specialists from the Union Medical College, etc. successively moved to Huaxi, borrowing the campus, buildings, teaching buildings, libraries, laboratories and teaching hospitals of West China Union University for joint schooling with West China Union University, making Huaxi's reputation reach its peak. After liberation, the university was dismembered, and the departments of literature, science and agriculture were separated, leaving only the medical and dental schools on Huaxi Hill, thus establishing a medical college, which developed into today's medical university.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of our school's founding, and students from all over the world have returned to their alma mater to celebrate. The school has arranged a week-long celebration with various activities. First, on October 1st, the opening ceremony kicked off the festivities. At the ceremony, the new student military training team was the biggest highlight. Each new student wore green military uniforms, with a belt and white gloves, looking very spirited. As the four teams marched past the main stage, their neat steps and energetic movements revealed their youthful energy, earning thunderous applause from the audience. Meanwhile, ten white doves and countless balloons were released beside the main stage, bringing the joyful atmosphere to its peak. In the following days, students participated in various anniversary activities, such as a school history photo exhibition, an old and new alumni symposium, and an alumni reunion. The ten-year history has cultivated a deep sense of pride and honor among West China students, with numerous outstanding figures emerging from our school's history who have made significant contributions to the development of modern Chinese medicine, such as Professor Du Shunde, the founder of pediatrics who first discovered favism; Professor Le Yicheng, an authority on gynecology; Professor Lu Sijue, an expert in anatomy; and Professor Liang Guangming, a leading figure in pathology. Not only that, but our school has also nurtured many heroic figures who have sacrificed themselves for the rise and liberation of the Chinese nation. Every day since entering school, students pass by a martyr's statue on their way to the cafeteria, and it was only through this visit that they learned about Martyr Mao Yingcai, an underground party member during the Anti-Japanese War who unfortunately died before liberation. There are many such martyrs, such as Martyr Zhan Zhen Sheng, who sacrificed himself in the Korean War, and in memory of him, our school's highest scholarship is named after him. The week-long celebration often reminds Lin Fanghua of the TV series "Soldiers' Assault" where there was a scene of the new recruits entering the Steel Seven Company. It was under that solemn ceremony and tragic atmosphere that each new recruit could truly become part of the company, growing into a "Steel Seven" soldier. This anniversary celebration is equivalent to Lin Fanghua's own entrance ceremony, making her truly proud of our school's glorious history and traditions from the bottom of her heart, and allowing her to grow into a true "West China person".

On the first evening of the school anniversary, the 90-level freshmen also held an important grade meeting. Grade Director Guo Mei designated student union and league committee members for each class, explaining that these were temporary positions, only lasting one semester, and that democratic elections would be held at the beginning of next year's new semester to replace them with officials recognized by everyone. The third class appointed Dai Ping as class president, while Tao Jianping became the league secretary due to her transfer to a seven-year program. Basically, each class had a male and female pair for class president and league branch secretary. Most of the student union and league committee members were from the seven-year program, after all, these people had shown exceptional talent in middle school and many were morally upright and talented. Additionally, Jiang Lu, who was skilled in dance, became the head of the cultural department, while Qi Dong, a football player with special athletic abilities, became the head of the sports department, which also made use of their strengths.

But what surprised Lin Fanghua was that Teacher Guo Meiyu actually appointed herself as the class's life commissioner. To think that in her previous life, she was just an ordinary student in middle school and had never been a class cadre, and in college, she was even more low-key. Could it be that the ginger soup incident left an impression on the teacher? "Ginger soup" and life commissioner, Teacher Guo really knows how to associate! Life commissioner is not a job that shows off one's abilities, put bluntly, it's just a servant for classmates. Every month, they are responsible for receiving and distributing living allowances for all classmates, generally also in charge of managing class fees, and also supervising dormitory hygiene, etc. Generally speaking, a life commissioner should be a patient, meticulous, and enthusiastic person. Lin Fanghua heard that she was the life commissioner and couldn't help but touch her nose: being patient and meticulous is fine, but I'm not exactly an enthusiastic person! However, since the teacher trusts me, even if it's just a small position, I'll do my best.

In just two days, she exercised her first power - collecting class fees and assisting the class cadres in organizing the first class activity - Mid-Autumn Festival party. Every time a good festival thinks of relatives, October 3rd is everyone's first Mid-Autumn Festival after leaving home, this party is hoping to promote mutual understanding among classmates, enhance friendship, and alleviate everyone's homesickness at the same time.

Dai Ping and Bai Yun took a few student cadres to borrow a classroom, and made some simple arrangements: they surrounded the tables and chairs in a circle, placed moon cakes, melon seeds, peanuts, oranges, apples and other fruits on the table, wrote "Mid-Autumn Festival" in four large characters on the blackboard, and drew some flowers and ribbons next to it. The arrangement was very simple, but when the classmates sat together, they could also feel the festive atmosphere.

Dai Ping and Bai Yun, as natural hosts, controlled the entire party process. Given that school had only started for a short month, most of the boys and girls in the class didn't even know each other's names. To eliminate everyone's strangeness, the first item on the evening's agenda was to ask classmates to introduce themselves one by one. When each person introduced themselves, Dai Ping skillfully asked questions and made jokes on the side, eliminating some introverted students' tension while allowing other classmates to get a preliminary understanding of this student's style from their answers. For example, when Liang Jiahui finished introducing himself, Dai Ping exaggeratedly said: "This is C City No. 7 Middle School's genius! He was admitted directly to our school! I'm so envious that he didn't have to take the college entrance exam!" When Lin Fanghua finished introducing herself, he said: "Everyone has heard of her! The female soldier who outdid the boys in military training! And as a member of the student council, you guys better not offend her, or she'll deduct your living allowance for a month! She's more powerful than me, haha!" Such remarks, 30% true and 70% joking, sometimes made the person being teased cry with laughter, but they all helped others quickly remember this person. Slowly, the atmosphere in the venue became more relaxed and harmonious.

The introduction ended, and the students who had prepared in advance performed a few programs. They were not carefully prepared or rehearsed for a long time, but the performing students were mostly very relaxed, with the purpose of just having fun and making everyone happy. For example, two boys casually imitated some famous advertisements - "We are pests! The righteous Comefleur must kill the pests!", and also the Hai Fei Si advertisement "The first date was originally very romantic, but my dandruff...". These hilarious performances made everyone laugh loudly. Several male and female students sang a few popular songs that everyone was familiar with. Yang Zhen forgot the lyrics while singing and hummed to get through it, finally sticking out her tongue and running back to her seat, and the classmates still gave her applause of understanding. Zhou Yu recited Su Shi's "Water Tune Song Head" for everyone, although she still had a bit of an accent, but her recitation was full of emotion, even when she finished the last sentence "But wish people longevity, thousands of miles to share the beauty", she bowed and her eyes were hidden with tears. Other students didn't know her situation, but Lin Fanghua knew that Zhou Yu's younger sister had drowned in water a few years ago, and as an older sister, she felt deep guilt and pain, even though it had been a long time since the incident, every time she thought about it, she was still very sad. It's just that everyone's life can't avoid experiencing the pain of losing loved ones, Lin Fanghua could only hope that time would help her forget the pain.

The party also included some small games, such as guessing riddles and grabbing chairs. Finally, there was a drumming flower relay, where the person who got the flower had to perform a program, singing, telling jokes, or reciting poetry. If they really couldn't do anything, they would just bow three times to everyone. Lin Fanghua also won a prize, and her classmates all teased her into singing a song. In her youth, Lin Fanghua was shy and introverted, and had no experience performing on stage. However, with the popularity of KTV culture in later years, she gradually discovered her talent for singing, and established confidence under the praise of her friends. Moreover, after several years of teaching at school, speaking or singing in front of a large crowd was no longer her weakness. Twenty years later, people's impression of her is that although she is quiet and reserved in daily life, when she sings KTV songs, she is elegant and charming, making people feel enchanted.

At this moment, the moon is already in the middle of the sky. In the classroom, only a dozen candles were lit. The moonlight shines through the high glass windows onto the faces and bodies of the classmates, creating a peaceful and beautiful atmosphere. Lin Fanghua was inspired by the scene and sang the theme song "Moon Song" from the TV series "Triumphant Return at Midnight":

"When I lay in my mother's arms, I often looked at the moon and smiled sweetly"

She is my good friend, no matter how much trouble she has in her heart.

As long as the moonlight shines on me, my heart drifts like a white cloud.

"As long as the moonlight shines on me, my heart is like a white cloud, quietly floating..."

The song ended, and everyone was immersed in the singing, even forgetting to applaud. Although the song reminded people of their mothers and hometowns, this nostalgia was not bitter but warm. This feeling continued until the end of the evening party, and even on the way back to the dormitory, some classmates were still humming this song from time to time.

Author Late Wind: Ah, Kawen, it's so hard to write! I have boundless admiration for those gods who update their stories with over 10,000 words a day! When chasing after others' stories, I always feel that the author is updating too slowly. But when writing my own story, I realize how difficult it is - after working hard for half a day, I only manage to write over 2,000 words, and even 3,000 or 4,000 words are rare, let alone 10,000!
