Chapter 12: 287th Exam x Calculations

  Third Person POV: Gon

As Gon was mulling over and contemplating the different abilities of Hisoka, he finally got some semblance of a clue concerning the circumstances of his death. He wasn't particularly versed in specialization or Post mortem nen. Kite explained those concepts to him in very little detail.

Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.

Despite being a conjurer, and possessing high chances to turn into a specialist, Kite didn't seem all that interested in that elusive nen. His behavior was even stranger every time Gon mentioned the latter division.

The man only had one of three words for it:

"Dreadful, Unadapted, Conflicting." Gon wasn't sure who those words were for...His teacher's expression was grim each time the matter was brought up.

However, something deep inside told him that his teacher and grandmaster were probably versed in the discipline.

The mystery surrounding his father only served to grow as time passed. It was partly Gon's fault because he never asked any substantial question even in the last life.

Instead of asking Kite real questions, all they talked about beside Mito and Whale Island was their own adventures. His pride got in the way when Kite proposed to give him a few tips on how to seek his father. It was more of a game for him than something that should have been straightforward.

There was no reason to make it difficult. A son had every right to meet their father even through spontaneous means.

"How foolish was I?" Gon thought in self-ridicule.

While the boy kept examining his not so friendly savior, the latter finally gazed in his direction. "Shit!" Gon, who realized his rashness, panicked and stopped looking that way.

At that exact moment, a fat yet burly middle-aged man approached. When the teen looked at him and the object in his hand, a smile formed on his face.

  Third Person POV: ??

"Atcha! That fool is playing with fire."

A bald and very fit young man with feathered eyebrows mocked inside. The man donned a black shirt with thick shoulder pads, grey pants, and shoes. He also wore a red bandana around his neck and white bandages around his wrists and ankles.

He was observing the situation with extreme caution due to his training and profession. As a ninja, the man always had the habit of studying his future opponents meticulously before making any move.

His talent was already exceptional, but as a result of his gruesome training, his senses were scarily acute.

When that boy made his entrance, his skin shivered. One thought in his mind:

  "Fucking monster!"

It was the second time in one day. He felt a similar feeling when that clown from before arrived. However, he only felt suffocated when gazing at the latter. The boy was a completely different case.

If the man in the corner was a vicious snake, then the kid was a proud and domineering tiger. The essence of their powers was the opposite.

As a rogue, the type of opponent he feared the most was the latter.

"Looks like I came to the right place." The man thought with excitement. He needed to find ways to get that scroll. If hunters were even more reliable than the examinees, then he was bound to find information. If not, his strength would once again experience a leap.

His training had become stagnant in recent years in any case.

  Third Person POV: Gon

"Hi, I suppose it's your first time here."

As Tonpa introduced himself politely, Gon noticed the furtive gazes from the bald man hidden at the other end of the long line of participants. The last time they met, Gon had suffered at his hands due to his stubbornness:

"What?!" Gon was amazed by Hanzo's actual power without nen. But the last line in his status screen appalled him.

"Let me introduce myself. The name's Tonpa. I might not look like it, but I'm a veteran.

If you have any questions, I'm the person to ask. I've taken this exam 34 times already."
