Chapter 32: Abandonment (Part 2)

  Chapter Thirty-Two: Abandonment (Part Two)

"Who?" Gu Huanli chose the pineapple juice, then picked up a croissant covered in peach jam and elegantly tore off a small piece to put into her mouth. It wasn't until after a while that she discovered the dazzling sunlight was shining all over the floor, filling the entire room with a bright golden light.

"A young girl, about the same age as Master. If she hadn't just been lingering at the door, the guard would have had security chase her away long ago." Cassidy placed his slender fingers on the table, interlocking them tightly and said slowly, "Don't you recognize someone like that, Miss?"

"I don't know." Gu Huanli lowered her head and sipped on the pineapple juice, her mind still on the conversation between her brother and aunt. Besides, in her memory, she didn't recognize such a person.

Cassidy refilled his orange juice, "But I look at her and she's like a lost lamb waiting for the Lord to come and save her."

"Since you're so curious, I'm sure you've already asked around." Gu Huanli finished her bread and left the living room, with only a soft voice coming from the girl's back, "Cassidy, come to the study after breakfast."

  "Yes, miss."

As he watched Gu Huan Lian disappear into the corridor, Cassidy muttered to himself, "Should I tell her about the lost lamb outside the door?" Although he was puzzled, it didn't affect his appetite at all. After eating a bowl of cornflakes with milk, an apple and three croissants filled with apricot jam, he pressed the bell under the table and said to the maid who came in response, "Please brew a pot of Darjeeling tea and send it to Miss's study."

He picked up the test papers that had been prepared long ago and went back to his room, but Cassidy didn't immediately go to Gu Huanli's study. In his opinion, this so-called assessment was like some kind of joke, and Gu Huanli should have thought so too.

Before descending to the human world, he had asked Archangel Mikhail why not directly erase the wrong memories, but instead have angels personally take on the role of soul guardians.

Archangel Mikhail's answer was simple, for as an angel, he had no qualification to erase the soul of a living being. Although mistakes were made and accidents happened, as Kusakabe Ruri, she was still alive.

  To be alive...

Yes, although human life is extremely short in the eyes of angels, every person has a brilliant light like a dazzling firework. Even if they have magical powers, angels still admire humans' imagination, creativity, and their strength and perseverance. Looking at this world, it's only been a few hundred years, but it has changed so much that he can hardly remember what the era he lived in looked like.

Yes, memories are the most precious things a person has. Love and hate, joy and sorrow, everything starts from zero and returns to zero. The only exception that can avoid erasing memories is becoming an angel like him... Could it be that Gu Huanli originally had the opportunity to become an angel, but because of her sinful actions, the system was unable to determine?

Cassidy had read through Gu Huanlin's file and thought that she wasn't a purely good person, nor was she a devout believer. So why would the Lord bestow blessings upon her?

Unbeknownst to him, a sense of doubt had filled his chest, and he didn't realize it until he was already standing in front of Gu Huan's study door - How could a Holy Angel question the Lord's decision? Question the Archangel's command!

Looking at the door of the house in front of him, Cassidy smiled wryly to himself, he seemed to be more and more like a human being, which was not a good omen, perhaps he would lose his qualification as an angel because of this.

He knocked gently on the door and entered, still seeing Gu Huanlin sitting casually by the window with a thread-bound book in hand. "I've always been curious, why can your Chinese be spoken so well? Was it something you were good at before? Or is it one of the necessary abilities for an angel?"

Cassady placed the scroll on the desk, smiling as he replied, "Ever since Rokutaro became the National Bishop, we've been studying Chinese. To angels, magic is just magic, but to be proficient in other countries' languages still requires hard work and study."

" Luo Qu Cai......" Gu Huan Li's fingers slowly turned the pages of the book, seemingly nonchalantly saying, "So, you were at least an angel before 1674 AD."

Cassidy's expression stiffened, this was the first time he felt displeased and even angry since coming to the mortal world. "If Miss wants to know something, just ask me directly, no need to beat around the bush."

"I'm asking you, will you give me a complete answer?" Gu Huanli raised her eyes to look at him, still using those icy cool eyes to stare, making people feel somewhat uneasy. "You won't. Because that's your memory, yours alone, a secret that you don't allow others to intrude upon or even peek at."

The silent gas spread rapidly, making people feel extremely oppressed.

Cassio stared at her expressionlessly, remembering how she looked when she first arrived in Heaven - slender, pale, with a hint of regret but facing death head-on. This wasn't bravery, Cassio thought, having held the position of Psychopomp in Heaven for hundreds of years, what kind of person hadn't he seen? Those who were lost and fallen, those who wailed and wept, those who begged piteously, those who were relieved... everyone had similar experiences, yet everyone had a completely different life. So, naturally, he looked at her file, her memories, then followed the prompts to input her time of death, cause of death. Everything seemed so normal, until he pressed Enter...

Perhaps the reason for her discontent was that he had seen her memories, giving her a sense of shame as if she had been spied upon. So, Cassidy's expression on his face changed from displeasure to a smile, "This is indeed an unequal relationship, if Miss feels that the story which happened long ago is not boring, I can tell Miss some memories of when I was human. Although most people in the story have long since passed away or reincarnated many times, but for me, they are as precious as old yellowed photographs."

"I just don't like the attitude you occasionally show, as if you know everything." Gu Huanli turned her head and looked at the dazzling autumn sun shining in the courtyard, seemingly with a slight jump of her eyebrows, but it seemed to be just her illusion. Outside the black iron gate, there seemed to be a flash of white.

  Who is it?

Her hand gently stroked the glass window, like a small bird trapped in a cage. Gu Huanli gazed at the dazzling sunlight, and a cool sensation spread from her fingertips.

"For the trouble caused by my attitude towards you, Miss, I offer you twelve million apologies." Cassidy placed one hand on his chest and bowed slightly.

Gu Huan's gaze slowly shifted to the west wing, where was about to give her a desperate sorrow or a glimmer of hope? Or perhaps, from start to finish, everyone lived in the gap between despair and hope, struggling to survive. A stiff smile appeared at the corner of her mouth as she turned around to look at the angel in front of her, her cherry lips slightly parted, whispering, "Cassidy, who is that person outside?"

"If the lady is willing, I wouldn't mind arranging this meeting myself." Cassidy smiled at her for taking the bold step forward, his smile unfolding like a sunny spring day, radiant and dazzling.

He used to be her soul guardian, watching over her while also gazing down at her from above like a bystander. But now that he's in the mortal realm, he's still indeed her soulmate, and will continue to watch over her, but the changes brought about by his arrival are real and tangible.

Ah, he forgot, he's peeking into her thoughts again.

Accompanied by Cassidy's low laughter as he left, Gu Huanli returned to her desk with the book in hand and began to answer the questions. Although she had spent too much time on piano in the past, English, as a global common language, was still somewhat within her grasp.

An hour later, she put down her pen. Her body leaned back, finding a comfortable posture, Gu Huanli exhaled a breath of air, closed her eyes, and let her thoughts fly freely.

"Miss, the guest has arrived." Along with the knock on the door, Cassidy's voice came from outside the study door, accompanied by a hint of laughter, his tone was consistently low and husky.

"Come in," said Gu Huanli, getting up and walking to the edge of the brown sofa in front of the bookshelf. She didn't sit down immediately, but instead picked up a book she wanted to read from the shelf. Since it was a conversation, she didn't need to be separated by a stern desk. The distance was already the best way to keep her distance, and the backlight was enough to cast shadows over her eyes and expression, Gu Huanli didn't want the other person to see through her thoughts.

Because she is actually in an unknown territory, she is the weaker side.

"What about him?" Gu Huanli looked at the tall Cassidy, he didn't seem to be joking with her, could it be that the mysterious person was unwilling to come in?

"Just behind him, however, she was a bit timid." Cassidy's lips curled up, and his playful voice overflowed with laughter. "If I didn't often appear at the mansion, I'm afraid this lovely lady would have knocked me out and sent me to the police station directly." As he spoke, he took a step to the right, revealing the person behind him.

Gu Huanli curiously sized up the slightly awkward girl in front of her, who looked to be around 12 or 13 years old. The girl had a pale yellow complexion, small eyes, and pale lips without any color. Her dry yellow hair was tied into two braids on her shoulders. She wore a white dress that, although it had been washed many times and looked somewhat old, was clean and tidy. A backpack made of patchwork floral fabric hung diagonally from her shoulder, but it seemed heavy, and Gu Huanli wondered what could be inside. However, recalling Cassidy's words, she thought it was probably just bricks or hammers or something like that.

Gu Huanli smiled slightly and stretched out her hand, saying softly, "Hello, I'm Gu Huanli. May I ask who you are?"

The girl glanced at her hand, hesitated for a moment, wanting to stretch out her own hand, but was afraid of being unclean, and secretly wiped it on her skirt. Just as she stretched it out, she felt that she was really shameless, and with a thud, she knelt down on the ground. "Miss Gu, I've come to atone for my father's sins."
